I’m not quite sure why there isn’t more press surrounding
The Barr Brothers. Maybe it’s because they fall into the folk and
singer/songwriter categories, groupings which don’t tend to receive as much
attention as genres like pop and rock. Maybe people just haven’t caught on yet.
Either way, this Montreal-based quartet has a knack for blending sounds in a
way I had never quite heard before. “Beggar in the Morning,” the group’s 2011
single off their September 2011 debut album The
Barr Brothers, captures this talent in full. I first heard of this track
when it was one of the free weekly downloads at Starbucks last December, and
every time I come back to it, I am in awe all over again. To me, this is the
perfect song to listen to at dawn, when the sun is just peeking through the
morning haze and the birds are stirring. The first few wavering notes build an
immediate depth into the song, crafting a landscape more than welcoming to the
birdcalls that seem to come in next. The vocals don’t enter until one minute
and thirty seconds into the song, but by that time, the tone for the piece is
already set. From there, the song takes flight, confidently building up to the
chorus and layering sounds with precision to make the journey sound light and
natural. From the gentle lead-in to the majestic chorus, “Beggar in the
Morning” captures that special early-morning moment of peace and contentment.
