If you like the Lumineers, then the music of Ivan & Alyosha is for you. If you enjoy the work of Russia’s renowned literary master Fyodor Dostoevsky, you might want to investigate this band (named for two of the leading characters in The Brothers Karamazov) as well. In addition to sharing the Dualtone label with the “Ho Hey” breakout artists, Ivan & Alyosha maintain the same simplistic folksy sound that has captured the attention of audiences across the U.S. and around the world. In Ivan & Alyosha’s latest single “Running for Cover,” this new indie-folk group from Seattle sets out to captivate their listeners by applying a progressive beat that fluctuates in volume and alternates between two main chords. The stripped-down feel of the song – the soft vocals, the bare acoustic strumming – is exactly why the folk-pop genre has so many fans at present: it feels honest, relatable, and real. “Running for Cover” is pleasing to listen to on repeat; though the track continues to build from start to finish, the consistency of the beat gives listeners something steady to tap their foot to.
